So, you’ve got Cognition on your phone already? And DesignGears went and released yet another new version with more great fixes and tweaks? You want it, don’t you? Admit it, it’s ok. I do too. But you have some questions or are unsure of the process?
Well read on my friends!
Consider this a continuation of the first How to: Flash Cognition on your Captivate.
By now you should be relatively familiar with having a rooted phone, and Clockwork Mod Recovery, but you may not be 100% sure how to deal with the Voodoo lagfix issue when upgrading, etc.
Well, here’s how to do it, with pictures!
First thing we need to do is disable Voodoo. The easiest way I’ve found to do this is by going into the Applications menu and click “My Files” to open the My Files app, then click on the “Voodoo” folder. You should only see one other folder in here, named logs. Hit the menu key and you should see the “Create folder” option – click it.

Now, name the folder “disable-lagfix” and click Ok.

Once this is done, power off the phone, then power it back on. You’ll hear the familiar robot voice saying it will convert the partition back to RFS. This part can and will take quite awhile – do NOT disturb the phone, let it finish this process – get some ice cream or something while you wait.
Once it’s done you’ll be back in Android and ready to actually handle the upgrade.
First, head to DesignGears download site and get the desired update.
Now, mount your phone to your computer and copy that file to your internal SD card.
Next head into ROM Manager and click “Install ROM from SD Card”.

Now click on the update file and click ok on the pre-install – no need to select anything there this time. On Reboot and Install click ok to reboot. The files should copy over automatically then reboot when completed.
When the phone comes back up, head back into the “My Files” app, long press on the disable-lagfix then click delete. Once the file is deleted, power the phone off, then back on.
The familiar voice will once again say it’s converting the file system to EXT4 – give it all the time it needs to complete, don’t disturb the phone during this time.
After the phone’s back up – you’re done and your upgrade is complete.
Remember to do this in order everytime you upgrade your Cognition install. Skipping steps will cause issues – especially if you skip disabling the lagfix – trust me.

We really dig what you write about here. We try and check your blog every day so keep up the good posts!
Awsome! Love this write up! Job well done!
I have Cognition v2.3b6. I want to upgrade to 2.3b8. Will any of my data, configurations, and/or apps be wiped clean, upgrading in this fashion?
config and apps yes – but if you use Titanium backup, then restore when you’re done upgrading then the only things you’ll lose are system settings.
