How to: Install and use Titanium Backup

So you have this nice Android phone, you’ve been playing around with it, getting things how you want it, getting high scores in games, typing in long WPA2 Keys for wireless, etc. Now you want to back it all up, just in case something goes wrong – or you’re planning on wiping your data and starting fresh – or let’s say you just want to install the latest ROM from a dev or worried about the latest OTA release from your provider? What can you do? You can back it up with Titanium Backup!

So, you want a little more granularity than just backing up or restoring your whole ROM (ROM Manager would handle that)? Titanium Backup will backup your whole system, or just the Apps, and from there you can restore things – and be picky with them too, not just restore the whole ROM or backup the whole ROM.

First you will need to already have a rooted phone, not a big deal if you’re a user of Cognition already. If you’re phone is rooted you can install Titanium Backup from the Marketplace, or by scanning the QR Code to the right.

Once you finish installing Titanium Backup and you open it up, it may request you install BusyBox – or you may be confronted with an error – or no apps listed under the Backup/Restore tab. If you get an error, or no apps listed, click the “Problems?” button on the bottom right of the first tap (Overview).

Either way, let it install BusyBox if necessary. Once everything is resolved you should be able to click the Backup/Restore tab and see it populated with all your apps, and various system settings – if this is where you stand, continue on – if not please check the previous steps over again.

Now, if you hit your phones menu button you’ll see more options pop up. Click the “Batch” button. You should get a list that looks like this:

Take a backup of your apps and data by clicking “RUN” next to ‘Backup all your user apps + system data’, or just ‘Backup all user apps’ to only backup your apps. When done it never hurts to verify your backups by simply hitting the “RUN” next to ‘Verify all your backups’.

Now, you may have noticed this takes awhile to complete – if you want it to go faster (I know I did) you can easily donate a minimum of $3.99 to the creator – this also gives you other benefits, including the ability to have a history of backups (more than just one) so you can restore to a point several backups ago if necessary. Also, one of my favorite new features is unlocked – which allows you to sync your backups to DropBox which saves you the hassle of copying your Titanium Backup directory off your phone for safe keeping.

If you ever need to restore your apps – just remember not to restore certain things – I personally only restore apps – if you restore phone settings – like “Accounts” it will occasionally cause issues with the Market, etc. Oh, and another benefit to donating – batch restore – so you don’t have to click each app and restore it individually.
