So you have this nice Android phone, you’ve been playing around with it, getting things how you want it, getting high scores in games, typing in long WPA2 Keys for wireless, etc. Now you want to back it all up, just in case something goes wrong – or you’re planning on wiping your data and starting fresh – or let’s say you just want to install the latest ROM from a dev or worried about the latest OTA release from your provider? What can you do? You can back it up with Titanium Backup!

So, you want a little more granularity than just backing up or restoring your whole ROM (ROM Manager would handle that)? Titanium Backup will backup your whole system, or just the Apps, and from there you can restore things – and be picky with them too, not just restore the whole ROM or backup the whole ROM.

First you will need to already have a rooted phone, not a big deal if you’re a user of Cognition already. If you’re phone is rooted you can install Titanium Backup from the Marketplace, or by scanning the QR Code to the right.

Once you finish installing Titanium Backup and you open it up, it may request you install BusyBox – or you may be confronted with an error – or no apps listed under the Backup/Restore tab. If you get an error, or no apps listed, click the “Problems?” button on the bottom right of the first tap (Overview).

Either way, let it install BusyBox if necessary. Once everything is resolved you should be able to click the Backup/Restore tab and see it populated with all your apps, and various system settings – if this is where you stand, continue on – if not please check the previous steps over again.

Now, if you hit your phones menu button you’ll see more options pop up. Click the “Batch” button. You should get a list that looks like this:

Take a backup of your apps and data by clicking “RUN” next to ‘Backup all your user apps + system data’, or just ‘Backup all user apps’ to only backup your apps. When done it never hurts to verify your backups by simply hitting the “RUN” next to ‘Verify all your backups’.

Now, you may have noticed this takes awhile to complete – if you want it to go faster (I know I did) you can easily donate a minimum of $3.99 to the creator – this also gives you other benefits, including the ability to have a history of backups (more than just one) so you can restore to a point several backups ago if necessary. Also, one of my favorite new features is unlocked – which allows you to sync your backups to DropBox which saves you the hassle of copying your Titanium Backup directory off your phone for safe keeping.

If you ever need to restore your apps – just remember not to restore certain things – I personally only restore apps – if you restore phone settings – like “Accounts” it will occasionally cause issues with the Market, etc. Oh, and another benefit to donating – batch restore – so you don’t have to click each app and restore it individually.

So, you’ve got Cognition on your phone already? And DesignGears went and released yet another new version with more great fixes and tweaks? You want it, don’t you? Admit it, it’s ok. I do too. But you have some questions or are unsure of the process?

Well read on my friends!

Consider this a continuation of the first How to: Flash Cognition on your Captivate.

By now you should be relatively familiar with having a rooted phone, and Clockwork Mod Recovery, but you may not be 100% sure how to deal with the Voodoo lagfix issue when upgrading, etc.

Well, here’s how to do it, with pictures!

First thing we need to do is disable Voodoo. The easiest way I’ve found to do this is by going into the Applications menu and click “My Files” to open the My Files app, then click on the “Voodoo” folder. You should only see one other folder in here, named logs. Hit the menu key and you should see the “Create folder” option – click it.

Now, name the folder “disable-lagfix” and click Ok.

Once this is done, power off the phone, then power it back on. You’ll hear the familiar robot voice saying it will convert the partition back to RFS. This part can and will take quite awhile – do NOT disturb the phone, let it finish this process – get some ice cream or something while you wait.

Once it’s done you’ll be back in Android and ready to actually handle the upgrade.

First, head to DesignGears download site and get the desired update.

Now, mount your phone to your computer and copy that file to your internal SD card.

Next head into ROM Manager and click “Install ROM from SD Card”.

Now click on the update file and click ok on the pre-install – no need to select anything there this time. On Reboot and Install click ok to reboot. The files should copy over automatically then reboot when completed.

When the phone comes back up, head back into the “My Files” app, long press on the disable-lagfix then click delete. Once the file is deleted, power the phone off, then back on.

The familiar voice will once again say it’s converting the file system to EXT4 – give it all the time it needs to complete, don’t disturb the phone during this time.

After the phone’s back up – you’re done and your upgrade is complete.

Remember to do this in order everytime you upgrade your Cognition install. Skipping steps will cause issues – especially if you skip disabling the lagfix – trust me.

Cognition is the project of an extremely dedicated and, many would agree, relentless developer from XDA. You probably know him as DesignGears, and you most likely are a fan of his work if you’re reading this – or you’re a first time user of his work and are curious to see what it can do for you.

So, how do you know if this ROM is right for you?

Performance
Do you want your phone to run the latest and greatest of the Captivate Lagfix developments? (Project Voodoo)
Do you want safe Overclocking\Undervolting? (Unhelpful’s Kernel)
Have you been disappointed by the speed and accuracy of your GPS? (CLShortFuse’s GPS Fix & NTP Server Tweaks)
Advertisements from apps cluttering your screen? (Ad Blocking via host file)
Tired of the AT&T and Samsung stuff you can’t remove? (ATT & Samsung bloat removed)
Want the latest Captivate Firmware? (Based on I897UCJH7 – latest OTA version)
Want to know the % of your battery available instead of just an image? (Stock Battery With %1-100)

Freedom
Wishing you had full control on YOUR device (Root access)? (SuperUser + Busybox)
Have the ability to install apps from more than just the Market? (SideLoading)

Tethering
Want to be able to share your phones data connection via Wifi to other Wifi Devices? (MobileAP)
Tether your device via USB to share internet access? (USB Tethering)

Built in Backup and Restore Capabilities
ROM Manager
Titanium Backup

If anything above appeals to you, or all of it does, then you’re definitely going to enjoy having Cognition on your Captivate.

*Default Disclaimer* If you follow this guide FULLY and in order, this will work – but I am not responsible, nor is DesignGears nor XDA responsible if your phone gets bricked if something goes wrong, or your house blows up, or you lose your job, or your significant other leaves you.

Now, the next step depends greatly on if you already are rooted and have ROM Manager installed. If you’re not already rooted and don’t have ROM Manager installed then continue below – if you are go ahead and jump to step 3.

Step 1: Rooting your Captivate

First things first – you’re going to need the USB Drivers for the Captivate. You can get them Here for x86 (32-bit Windows) or Here for 64-bit Windows. Once downloaded obviously install these. If you use Ubuntu or another Linux OS like me these drivers are not necessary.

Next, we need the file that actually does the rooting – you can download that file here. This file will need to be copied into the root of the internal sd card on our phone (Not the external sd card – if you have one installed you may want to remove it to keep this step simple). To copy the file to the desired location lets first make sure the phone is set properly. Hit your menu key (far left hard key on the bottom of the screen) and then Settings, Applications, USB Settings. You should see a screen like this (but with less options) – select what I have selected (Mass storage).

Now that the phone is set right, and the drivers are installed and we have our rooting file (update.zip) we’re ready to root.

Plug the USB connector from your computer into your phone. You should see something in your top bar on your phone – click and slide it down and you’ll see this:

Click it and you’ll see a Mount request like this, click Mount to continue.

Now on your computer you should be able to get to the newly mounted drive from your computer. Don’t go into any of the other directories, just copy the update.zip here. Then hold down the power button on your phone and click the Power Off option, wait a minute while the phone shuts down, then hold down your volume up and volume down buttons – while doing this also hold down the power button (For reference this is the “3-button method”). You should see the white AT&T screen – keep holding all three buttons down, the screen will go black then back to the AT&T screen again. On this second time of the AT&T screen showing let go of the power button, but keep holding the volume up and volume down buttons. When you see the Recovery Screen which looks like below (bad pic I know but you get the idea from it – it’s from my wifes iPhone) select “reinstall packages” to install the updates.zip to root your phone – to move up and down use the volume up and down buttons, then select them using the power button.

When it’s done, reboot the phone. The difference is, now you’re rooted (To double check, go into your Applications menu – you should see an app called “Superuser Permission”.

Step 2: Installing Clockwork Mod ROM Manager

Now that we’re rooted we’re ready to install ROM Manager.

You can search for it in the Marketplace, or if you’re like me and love QR codes you can scan the code to the right here.

Once Clockwork is installed you can find it in your applications menu listed as “ROM Manager”. Open it up and at the top you’ll see the option “Flash ClockworkMod Recovery”, click it and you’ll see a list of phones – select “Galaxy S Captivate” and you should see a “Successfully downloaded ClockworkMod recovery” message. Click ok.

Now, to play it safe – lets backup our current setup in case we need it to restore from. Scroll down in ROM Manager and find “Backup Current ROM”.

Give it a name, or leave it default, then click Ok. This will reboot your phone and take a full backup of your current setup – it may take awhile, but it’s worth it if you need to restore.

Step 3: Installing Cognition

For our next step you’re going to have to head over and download the latest and greatest Cognition from Designgears here at his download site.

Once the file is downloaded (at the time of this posting it should be Cognitionv2.1.3.zip) copy it to your internal sd card on your phone by mounting it like we did back in Step 1 to root the phone.

Now is where the Clockwork Mod Recovery comes into play make sure you clicked that top option “Flash ClockworkMod Recovery”.

Again, back in the ROM Manager App, this time we’re going to click “Install ROM from SD Card”.

Scroll down to the location of the .zip file you moved over and select it, then click Ok. For ROM Pre-installation I usually make sure to select “Wipe Data and Cache”, then click Ok.

Your phone should now reboot to install your new ROM after you click Ok. After the reboot you may see the recovery screen – if you do click “reinstall packages” this will put you into the ClockworkMod Recovery Menu. Use the volume down key to get to “install zip from sdcard” option and hit the power button on it. Next use the volume down button to select the “Cognitionv2.1.3.zip” file and hit the power button again. Now it wants a confirmation – use volume down to get to the “YES” option, then hit the power button to start the install.

After this part is complete scroll down to “*****Go Back*****” and hit the power button, then hit it again on “reboot system now”.

Once it’s done copying all the files and installing the new ROM the phone will reboot. You’ll hear a robot voice saying it’s converting the file system to EXT4 – let this go on, it may take awhile. After a long period of time the voice will say the conversion was successful. You should see the Samsung S after a bit, leave this going, don’t assume it’s hung, the first boot may take some time. After the phone comes back up it should look like this:

All done. Cognition is now installed on your phone. As a standard it’s not a bad idea a few minutes after your first boot into a new ROM to power off then power back on the phone just to make sure everything’s all set.

If you have any odd issues go back and make sure you did everything in order of this post. Thanks for reading, and I hope you enjoy your Captivate with Cognition! If you enjoy it consider shooting a donation off to DesignGears!

If you currently have a Samsung Captivate I897(AT&T’s branded version of the Samsung Galaxy S phone) at some point in your process of messing with it, or just to clean house, you may find yourself wanting to bring it back to complete stock. To do so is a relatively simple task, but it must be done in a particular order.

First on our agenda – if you have already rooted your phone – but don’t have Titanium Backup installed (Great app, I recommend donating, it gives you great benefits if you use it often) then scan this QR code or search the market. If you don’t care about blowing away all your apps and data then you can obviously skip this step.

Once Titanium Backup is installed, open it – it will likely need to install BusyBox, etc. Once this is done, hit your menu key and click “Batch” – then click “Run” next to “Backup all user apps + system data” then click “Run the batch Operation” at the top of your screen – this will take some time. Once it’s complete you’re ready to flash!

Now first in line will be to download and install the Samsung USB drivers – you can get them Here for x86 (32-bit Windows) or Here for 64-bit Windows.

Install the drivers before proceeding.

Now, turn off the phone – once the shutdown animation completes watch the bottom four buttons on the phone, they will light up, then go dark – at this point the phone is off. Remove the battery cover, then pull out your SIM Card, and if you have an external SD card remove that as well. Re-insert your battery but DO NOT power the phone back on.

Download The Odin One-Click Downloader this is the stock version the phones shipped with – I897UCJF6.

Open Odin (The file you just downloaded) and it should look like this:

Now, while holding down both the volume up and volume down buttons on the left of the phone connect the USB cable between your computer and phone – this will put the phone in download mode and assign it a COM Port – you will know this is correct if the phone displays a download screen and your Odin screen looks similar to this (The COM number will vary):

If you see that, then you’re all set – if not – try again, make sure you start from a phone being in the off state – and odin open! Once Odin looks like the above screenshot – click “Start” in Odin to begin the process. This will take a few minutes.

When it’s completed your phone will automatically reboot and Odin should look like this:

Your phone should now be stock again!

Parallel Kingdom: Age of Emergence is a fun mobile game for Android\iPhone, etc. It is a MMORPG utilizing your GPS to determine your location in a parallel “universe” (thus the name).

To install, either check the market or scan this QR Code:

Once the game is installed and you run it you’ll be asked to enter your information to start your character.

When you arrive in the world of PK you’ll be in a small tutorial that will teach you some of the basic functions of the game – I’ll go more in depth with you shortly but finish your tutorial first – at the end of the tutorial a monk will ask you for a Referral Code – use xtnfi (If you use it you gain 300 food and 1000 gold) – after you do this send me (ponack) a message in game – I will personally send you another 500 gold as a thank you since it is a bonus for me as well).

Now the game will transport you to your “actual” location. If you start anywhere similar to where I did you’ll see some trolls, maybe a troll hut (great for buying feathers, etc so don’t go killing them now) some elk or wolves, trees, etc. And if you’re as unfortunate as me, there will be a dragon – which because you’re reading this, you won’t make the mistake I did and go attack the dragon (I assume I was tasty). Safe to attack right off the bat would be Crawlers, Larva (might need to use a healing berry), Wolves, and Elk. If there’s any armor or weapons on the ground near you pick em up and use them if or in your inventory use the “dump for gold” option for some quick cash – try to find a backpack right away as this will increase the load you can carry.

With your starting food (and the bonus food you get from listing me as a referrer) save it for your leveling up – you will need it – don’t waste it on your dog. With your starting gold – your priority should first be to upgrade your backpack (after you find one) and then upgrade weapons and armor a bit.

The trees you see will be Mourning Trees (Harvest berrys from these and be near them for Area of Effect healing – if there’s no Trolls around you can also chop it down for lumber.

After you’ve finished exploring your area a bit and maybe farmed some items\gold go ahead and check your items list, you should see a “City Pass” for most likely your nearest larger city area – clicking it will instantly transport you to that location. City zones have black flags so you and other players can’t claim the area as your own, etc. There’s a large building in the center, if you click it and click “Join this city” you’ll be given your first oil well (this is also where you go to refine oil) – you’ll need to click on it and start creating Golums to work on your oil well.

From this point on, mine what you can, and get lumber where you can, kill what you can and collect what you can. You main focus at first is to level up – start thinking about the choices you make for your skill points – if you want to be a crafter or a warrior – the choice is yours.

In this post I’ll give details of installing VMWare Server in Ubuntu 10.04 (Server). This guide assumes you have an Ubuntu Server already running.

Preparing the Server

First thing we’ll want to do is make sure our repositories are up to date – and make sure we have the prerequisites installed – enter anything that looks like the below test into your servers terminal directly or via an ssh session to your server:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install build-essential linux-headers-$(uname -r)

Now, while apt is downloading and installing our packages – head over to the VMWare Server Download site – you’ll have to register for free to be able to download VMWare Server – when you get to the download page click the link for the the Linux .gz file (not .rpm) and make sure you get the version for your flavor of server – 32 bit or 64 bit.

Installing VMWare Server

Once the prerequisites are done installing, and your VMWare Server package is done downloading we’re ready to proceed in extracting the files and running the install script.

tar xvf VMware-server-2.0.2-203138.i386.tar.gz

When extracting remember that your file may be a different name depending on the build version – so after typing “tar xvf VMware-server” you could just hit your tab key to auto-complete it.

cd vmware-server-distrib
chmod +x vmware-install.pl
sudo ./vmware-install.pl

During the install script you’re safe to stick with the defaults (Defaults are options in the brackets) to use the defaults just hit enter.

When the system starts compiling the tools you may see something like this:

In this post I’ll explain how to install StarCraft 2 from the Digital Download (exe) on Blizzards website within Ubuntu Linux (10.04 Lucid Lynx). We’ll be using an App called “PlayOnLinux” which is a gaming front-end for Wine essentially. Step One: Downloading\Installing PlayOnLinux First thing you’ll need to do is install PlayOnLinux if it’s not installed already. To do so head over to PlayOnLinux to grab the latest version (the version Synaptic grabs is older). Scroll down to Ubuntu, click on it, then click the link to download the .deb file – once the download completes please install it (disregard the warning about there being an older version in the repositories). While that’s installing – head over to Battle.net SC2 purchase site and start entering your payment info and download the executable. Step Two: Configure PlayOnLinux Now we need to set PlayOnLinux to properly run our new game. Click Applications, Games, PlayOnLinux. A “First Run Wizard” will run and check for updates. Once that’s completed click Tools, then Manage wine versions. Select 1.2-rc7 and click Add. Our version of Wine will begin downloading and installing. Once it’s done, we can close the above window. Step Three: Installing StarCraft 2 From the main PlayOnLinux window click Install. Down on the bottom of this new window you’ll see a “Install a .pol package or an unsupported application”. Click it (it’s red and my cursor is over it in the screenshot below). When the Installation Wizard pops up, select “Manual installation” and click Next. Next screen you get with choices is this one below – click “Install a program in a new prefix” then Forward: Next Screen asks for a new name for the prefix. Enter “StarCraft2″ and click Forward: Next window select both check boxes as I have below and click Forward. Select the version of wine we previously installed – 1.2-rc7 and click Forward. If you get the below screen, click Install. On the next window click the “Graphics” tab – it will look like this: If you have dual monitors, you’ll want to play in windowed mode by selecting “Emulate a virtual desktop” here. Otherwise just click ok. The next window for PlayOnLinux should be up – it wants the location of your executable install file: Point it in the right direction and click Forward to start the install. The downloader will ask for a path – I just pointed mine to the C:\Program Files directory (Virtual environment Wine creates). At 6.99 Gb – this part may take awhile – so feel free to take a break now – like seriously – go watch a movie, walk the dog, eat dinner, play another game, etc.

When the downloader completes you’ll see the installer splash screen. Click Install.

Next is the EULA – oddly showed up blank for me – may do the same for you – if so click Agree to continue.

Next you pick the install location – I stuck with the default, then click ok.

While the install starts you’ll see this window in the foreground – since we did the digital download we can click SKIP.

And then we wait while it installs…

Next it will automatically update.

When it’s done you can click Play.

Once it’s done loading, click Quit so we can finish.

Here’s a simple procedure for installing Dropbox in Ubuntu 10.04. It’s not available from Synaptic so, you’ll have to download it from their site.

First though, head to the Dropbox site and register for a free account (Yes that’s a referral link – but don’t feel dirty, it gives each of us a bonus 250Mb free storage – normal new sign-ups only get 2Gb, you’ll get 2.25Gb right off the bat just for using this link).

Now that you’re signed up, the final page in the process includes a download link – there’s two available for Ubuntu as a .deb package – snag the one you need (Standard x86 or 64 bit).

After the file finishes downloading simply install the package and follow the steps it gives you – when you run it for the first time it will ask for your login information – simply give it the credentials you registered with previously and login.

Now – if you stuck with the default location of your Dropbox folder, simply click Places, Home Folder – and in there you should see a Dropbox Folder – any files you put in this folder will be automatically synchronized via the internet across any devices you may have also linked to it – I currently have it on my Android phone (easily installed via the Android Market), my work Windows XP laptop, and my Ubuntu Linux PC at home – very handy!
